Samba is one of the most popular forms of music and dance in Brazil. Moreover, It is widely viewed as Brazil’s national musical style. The name semba (please note the difference in spelling) most probably comes from the Afro Brazilian “lundu”( XVIII century), also known as umbigada or batuque: a mixture of African rhythym brought from the slaves of Angola who lived in Bahia state.

When the slaves were transferred to Vale do Paraíba (XIX century) to work on coffee plantations, they brought the semba with them. They later moved to the National Capital; Rio de Janeiro, and after the abolition of slavery semba gained its own identity and gained rapid mainstream growth.

Whilst living in the carioca (carioca is a person from Rio) districts of Gamboa and Saúde the freed slaves introduced the African rhythym semba to Royalty. It used to be danced in the houses of Bahia’s black ladies like Amélia, Ciata and Prisciliana.This rhythym soon developed into what we know today as Samba, mixing with polca, maxixe and xote.

The title “samba school” (“escola de samba”) originates from samba’s formative years. The term was adopted by larger groups of samba performers in an attempt to lend acceptance of samba and its performance; local campuses were often the practice/performance grounds for these musicians and “escola” gave early performers a sense of legitimacy and organization to offset samba’s somewhat controversial social atmosphere.

“Pelo Telefone” (1917), by Donga (Ernesto dos Santos) and Mauro Almeida, is generally considered the first samba recording. Its great success carried the new genre outside the black ghettos. Who created the music is uncertain, but it was most probably the work of the group around Tia Ciata, among them Pixinguinha, João da Baiana, Mauro de Almeida e Sinhô (José Barbosa da Silva- known as the King of Samba). This song was really created in a “roda de partido alto” by a group of high quality samba composers.

After the recording, Samba conquered the phonographic market and with the inauguration of the radio in 1922 the music would reach the middle classes in Rio.and the new style brought the talents of middle class composers like the medical student Noel Rosa and the law student Ari Barroso Ari Barroso is famous for composing ”Tarzan, the son of the taylor ” and ”Aquarela do Brasil”.

With the radio other talented people like Francisco Alves, Orlando Silva and Carmen Miranda became great samba idols in Brazil.

In 1929, a group of musicians led by Ismael Silva founded the first Samba School, Deixa Falar, in the neighborhood of Estácio de Sá. They transformed the musical genre to make it better fit the carnival parade. In this decade, the radio spread the genre’s popularity all around the country, and with the support of the nationalist dictatorip; Getúlio Vargas, samba became Brazil’s “official music”.

In the following years, samba has developed in several directions, from the gentle samba-canção to the drum orchestras which make the soundtrack of carnival parade. One of these new styles was the bossa nova, made by middle class white people. It got increasingly popular over time, with the works of João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim. In the sixties, Brazil was politically divided, and the leftist musicians of bossa nova started to gather attention to the music made in the favelas. Many popular artists were discovered at this time. Names like Cartola, Nelson Cavaquinho, Zé Keti and Clementina de Jesus recorded their first albums.

In the seventies, the samba got back on the radio waves. Composers and singers like Martinho da Vila, Clara Nunes and Beth Carvalho dominated the hit parade.

In the beginning of the eighties, after having been sent underground due to styles like disco and Brazilian rock, Samba reappeared in the media with a musical movement created in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. It was the pagode, a renewed samba, with new instruments, like the banjo and the tantan, and a new language, more popular, filled with slang. The most popular names were Zeca Pagodinho, Almir Guineto, Grupo Fundo de Quintal, Jorge Aragão, and Jovelina Pérola Negra.

Their typical instruments are: repinique, caixa, surdo, chocalho, agogô, pandeiro.

Nowadays, samba is still one of the most popular musical genres in Brazil.

Many people yearn to play the piano. Amazingly enough, aptitude and natural talent are not as important as you might think. Like most endeavors in life, it’s your attitude that makes the difference.

Say to yourself, “I can learn to play the piano,” and you have overcome the biggest obstacle in learning to play the piano.

We hold ourselves back from achieving so much in life. Believe it and you can achieve it!

Does that sound like a tired cliche? It doesn’t have to be. If you want to learn to play the piano, start with a simple, step-by-step plan like the one below. It won’t be long before you’re saying, “I can learn to play the piano!”

Keep this in mind…

You only need to know five letters of the alphabet to play the piano: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G

You only need to count to 5 for fingerings and only to 4 for the number of beats in a measure.

Can you recite the alphabet up to G? Can you count to 5? Then repeat after me, “I can learn to play the piano.”

Decide on a course of study. The major options are…

1. Private lessons
2. Group classes
3. Multimedia instructions, such as on-line videos, DVDs, and audio lessons

If you’re a busy working adult (and who isn’t), choose option 3–you’ll find the greatest success with it.

Why?

• You fit piano instruction into your schedule
• You don’t have to travel anywhere
• You can play the lessons over and over

… to name but a few reasons.

Start with lesson one and play the video or DVD several times. Get familiar with the terminology.

Now go to your piano and find the keys the lesson was pointing out. Duplicate what was taught in lesson one. Now do it again.

Guess what? You are playing the piano!

Take it slowly and move on to the next lesson when you’re ready.

If you’ve got an electric or digital keyboard, you can make things more fun by turning on different sounds when practicing.

Today sound like an oboe. Next time, go for a pipe organ sound.

If you’ve got percussion sounds on your keyboard, add them, too. Even if you’re just playing five notes from C to G, it’s more fun with a bossa nova accompaniment going.

That wasn’t so hard, was it? It won’t be long until you’re saying, “I can learn to play the piano.”

Just the other day after a conversation with one particularly successful guitarist, it struck me that there is a common thread that runs through all successful guitarists. Actually, I’ve noticed this over the years as I observed how many “average” students accelerated past “naturally talented” players. However as time goes by, it has become increasingly obvious that the professional attitudes that certain players cultivate are the deciding factors as to those who “make it” the those who don’t!

While their styles may be different and their areas of specialization may be diverse, they all have very similar habits. As I continued my conversations with these guitarists, I jotted down the common habits that distinguish these successful people, and here they are for you to study.

1. Set Goals – focus on your primary objective. All successful guitarists have mastered the ability to set goals. Here’s some tips for goal setting.

(a) Write your goals down, this is very important!

(b) Be specific, what do you want to achieve, in what time frame, what special skills do I need?

(c) Create a goal board, many top guitarists create a goal board where they place pictures of things they want to achieve or acquire i.e., a picture of a guitar, amp, car etc. they place this goal board in their practice room or office to help keep them motivated and stay “on-track”.

2. Daily Practice – the most successful players are also the most confident and competent players and they are confident and competent because they have a daily practice regimen.

The top guitarists are internally motivated and self- disciplined, no matter how things are going in the rest of their life, they stay focused on their musical goals.

3. Read Music – The ability to read standard music notation is also a common thread among top guitarists. In a world of ‘fix-it- all’ in five minutes guitar books and the ever popular guitar TAB system, nothing beats the ability to be musically literate!

If you want to be a top guitarist, learn to read standard music notation, otherwise you could find yourself spending your whole musical life re-inventing the ‘musical wheel’.

4. Quality Instruments / Equipment – It goes without saying that your equipment must be functional and in good repair. Notice I did not say expensive. Everything right down to your electric guitar lead must work. Remember, to have your guitar(s) set up by a competent repair person.

5. Study All Styles Of Music – This is the key to many successful musicians careers. Versatility, often means a long and successful career.

6. Excellent People Skills – This is a classic, how many times have I seen an excellent guitarist totally trash his/her career by simply having an ‘attitude’ problem.

Actually, it’s just common sense and having respect for all the people you come in contact with in the music/studio scene you would be amazed how much of my work comes from work of mouth, and that includes studio owners, engineers, studio cleaners etc.(and I’ve been doing this professionally for 30+ years).

I can vividly recall one particular guitarist who had issues with a certain studio secretary, the secretary later became the studio owner’s wife,(they often do) guess how much work that guitarist got from that studio …zero!

7. Reliable – Punctual etc. – Again, this should be painfully obvious, however it never ceases to amaze me how guitarist’s will spend their life devoted to their instrument but just can’t remember to show up for the gig.

Recently, the owner of one of the biggest recording studios in this country told me how a guitar player simply failed to ‘show up’ for the recording session, he obviously must have had something much more important on (I do recall it was a nice day for surfing).

Notice how two out of the seven habits of highly successful guitarists deal with non-musical things i.e., people skills & being reliable, punctual etc., keep these things in mind and study top players at work whenever you have an opportunity.

It’s easy to see why someone like James Taylor is successful just look at how he interacts with his audience and band.

DJs have been going to Ibiza for over 10 years and have seen many sides to the Island, both night and day. Here they give an insight into Ibiza outlining what they see as the top 10 must do’s when on the island:

1 Enjoy sunset on the West coast. A truly spiritual moment on the island is how Lee describes enjoying the sunset over the sea line. Seen more of a celebration, the sunset brings people together and is seen as a symbol of the beginning of night. Ibiza clubbing is legendary and what better way to signal the start of an evening’s festivities than by watching the sunset.

2 Take a trip Formentera… After a hard nights clubbing what better way to recover than by taking a short trip over the island of Formentera. Ibiza holidays should not pass by without enjoying some of Spain’s longest, cleanest, whitest and least crowded beaches. Only a 20 minute ferry-ride away, Formentera has some fantastic places to eat including Yuan and Andre’s wonderful fish restaurant.

3 Opening and Closing Parties… The start and finish of the summer season is always a great time to enjoy clubbing in Ibiza. The parties are bigger, better and people really push the boat out to have a good time. Having grown in popularity over the years you will now find more people on the island in June and late September than ever before. The weather is great and Ibiza villas can be found on the cheap!

4 Try and find Atlantis… An undiscovered part of Ibiza which Lee describes as a ‘nice little roadtrip’, Atlantis has a magical history; created over 1,000 years ago when rock was quarried to build the fortress walls of Ibiza town, it can be found in the far South West of Ibiza. Over the centuries, stonemasons and artists have created their own sculptures that include dragons and people emerging from the rocks. Hire cars in Ibiza are reasonably priced so happy hunting!

5 Visit Ibiza’s hippy markets… Ibiza has two main hippy markets. Es Cana Hippy market held on Wednesdays is located in the North West of the island in the Arabi complex, just outside the town. The second hippy market is known as Las Dalias and is held on Saturdays. It makes a nice change to do some shopping in Ibiza. Lee states there are plenty of bargains to be had!

6 Visit the Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town… The historic Dalt Vila actually means high town. Representing the oldest part of the town, the rocky escarpment is topped by huge Renaissance walls that surround Ibiza’s finest monuments. Climb to the top and check out the views over Ibiza Town and out towards Formentera. There are some lovely Ibiza apartments to rent nearby.

7 Visit the Salinas salt pans… The Ibiza salt pans represent over 1,000 acres of land and at their height made up Ibiza’s main industry. In fact the salt was used to finance the city wall that surrounds Ibiza Town. Today around 60,000 tonnes of salt is exported annually with the highest quality going to Norway for salting cod and the rest heading to Scotland to help salt the roads. They are quite a sight as you drive down to Salinas beach, worth stopping and taking some pictures.

8 Park up and look out to Es Vedra… Rising to 378m above sea level, this seemingly semi-submerged volcano is in fact a limestone outcrop. There’s a great little spot where you can have a picnic, the views are stunning. The South West of Ibiza has some lovely secluded villas to rent that are nearby.

9 Party at Bora Bora… Bora Bora is an Ibizan institution. While the clubs may be expensive, Bora Bora has always been a place for the free spirited. Pumping out top quality house music from 4:30pm every day, it is very much a place to be seen. Having played here a few times we can say the atmosphere is fantastic by 6pm. You can either party or relax on one of the many beach loungers situated on the beautiful sands of the Playa Den Bossa. There are many Ibiza apartments in Playa Den Bossa to rent ensuring you are never too far from the party.

10 Ibiza Restaurants… Eating good food is all part of the holiday experience and when it comes to Ibiza, you are spoilt for choice. We love L’Elephant and Alyoun, great menus, and you are always spoilt for choice. Both in San Rafael these are two of many restaurants you can enjoy throughout the summer months. But our favourite and indeed best kept secret is the little local eaterie, Bon Profit in Plaza Del Parque, Ibiza Town, great food great prices.

In one of my favorite children’s books, Anne Of Green Gables, Anne states, “Today is a new day with no mistakes in it.” I love that line. It’s how I feel each new school year and as my kids will tell you, I share it with them every August to a cacophony of groans and sighs. It’s a chance to shake off the bad from the previous year and embrace the new opportunities that lie ahead.

Meanwhile, as our children step on the bus filled with hope and determination for the new year (I can dream, can’t I?), our dogs watch out the window as the big yellow box takes all their fun away. Dogs are mentally stimulated by all the activity during the long summer days but as fall rolls in, they aimlessly follow us around the house. They may dig a little more, get into the garbage….they manage to find opportunities for entertainment and enrichment. Instead of “a new day with no mistakes in it”, they seem to fill their time making mistake after mistake. Or they lie around the house, packing on the pounds until the time comes when they can sit and look out the window for the big yellow box and the entertainment committee to return.

Our dogs deserve a chance to start anew every year. If our dogs could get on a bus in August and head to obedience school, they’d spring at the chance. They have an amazing ability to learn and unlike some of our kids, they actually embrace the opportunity. Dogs love to learn so take them back to school. Set aside one hour out of your week to brush up on obedience by enrolling in a class. There are some great classes at Rescue Village to do just that. Maybe your dog is already at the top of his class when it comes to obedience. Why not step it up a notch and try a Rally Obedience class? Rally is great sport where owner and dog navigate a course with numbered signs indicating different exercises to perform such as Sit-Down-Sit, Figure 8, Recall Over Jump, and other challenging behaviors. Maybe you have the more athletic type. An agility class can channel all that energy out of making swiss cheese out of your lawn and into jumps, tunnels, and weave polls. There’s also Fly Ball. An amazing thing happens when you take your dog “back to school”. You’ll see your relationship with your dog strengthened. You’ll be forming a bond and building trust between you and your dog. You’ll be helping him use his creative mind, free spirit, and natural talents for good–not evil. And you’ll be enriching his life as well as yours.
